A judge from the 2022 Miss Universe panel is shedding light on why the folks running the show are declaring bankruptcy just days before the big event.

“I believe the uproar about a transgender woman participating in Miss Universe and advocating for ’empowering women’ is quite contradictory,” expressed television host and reporter Emily Austin on Thursday during an interview on “Varney & Co.”

“I believe her business in Thailand is facing some financial challenges,” she added, “but beyond the financial aspect, there are growing concerns about the social and moral aspects of it. People are starting to take notice.”

Anne Jakrajutatip, a Thai business magnate and transgender advocate who owns the JKN Global Group, acquired the Miss Universe organization for $20 million in 2022. Jakrajutatip, known internationally as a transgender celebrity, characterized the purchase as “a powerful, strategic addition to our portfolio” at the time.

According to an official statement submitted to the Stock Exchange of Thailand by JKN Global Group, it was disclosed that “JKN Global Group Public Company Limited (the ‘Company’) filed for business rehabilitation with the Central Bankruptcy Court under the Bankruptcy Act B.E. 2483 (1940) (as amended) (the ‘Bankruptcy Act’) on November 8, 2023. The Central Bankruptcy Court subsequently accepted the petition for business rehabilitation on November 9, 2023.”

Following this development, the Miss Universe Organization released a subsequent announcement, acknowledging that “due to the current financial situation… we confirm that Miss Universe 2023 will be held in El Salvador on 18 November 2023, with our unwavering commitment to providing an exceptional experience for our fans as our top priority.”

This year’s Miss Universe competition is breaking new ground by including at least two transgender contestants for the first time. Meet Marina Machete, a flight attendant representing Miss Portugal, and Rikkie Kollé, the inaugural transgender Miss Netherlands. While Spain’s Ángela Ponce made history as the first trans contestant in 2018, she didn’t make it to the finals.

On Thursday, Austin strongly voiced her opinion that transgender women shouldn’t be allowed to participate in elite pageants like Miss Universe.

According to her, true empowerment of women doesn’t involve demeaning or belittling them by permitting individuals who were originally men or biologically male to enter fields like sports or beauty pageants, appearing all glammed up and transformed—undeniably beautiful men, she emphasized—and potentially overshadowing women in these industries. Austin stressed that this approach contradicts the essence of women’s empowerment.

The judge from the 2022 panel also pointed out that decisions in these competitions often hinge on the contestant’s interview, emphasizing that the life experiences of a transgender woman may not align with those of a biological woman.

In the conversation, Austin emphasized the significance of the interview segment in these competitions, highlighting that it draws from the contestant’s life journey and how, as a woman, she has evolved with a desire to make a positive impact on the world. Austin expressed her viewpoint, stating that if someone transitioned from being a man to a woman, their life story might lack the authentic experiences of womanhood. She pointed out that such an individual may not understand things like period cramps or the unique challenges of walking down a stage during that time of the month, truly embracing femininity.

Austin clarified, “You may be a man identifying as a woman, and that’s okay,” but she urged for respecting boundaries and not encroaching into industries specifically designed for women. She highlighted the need for a clear line to avoid complications in this regard.
